I am a ghoul. Now let me assure you, being a ghoul is absolutely nothing like being a zombie. As if. Zombies are nasty creatures that eat the living. I only eat the dead. See? Big difference.

I found Ava delightful. For a ghoul who sings a music instrument and uses writing to finance her ghoul life-style and we learn that in this world vampires, werewolves and other similar creatures are real.

Thankfully I have the ability to heal. Supposedly, I can take a shotgun blast to the chest and not die. I’d just as soon not test the theory, but it is kind of nice to think that that little bit of insurance is in my tool box. To actually kill me, you need to either sever my head, or pierce my heart with a weapon made from cold-treated iron—whatever the heck that is. I feel comfortable sharing that with you because you will either dismiss this as just another one of “those” stories that are so popular right now, or you just won’t ever feel the need to go out and hunt down a ghoul that is trying to make the world a better place.

We learn all sorts about Ava. How she finds the smell of dead bodies so appetising. How her mouth morphs into a shark-like monster feature to allow her to devour bodies. Now here’s a cure for overcrowded cemeteries.

PS: it kinda reminded me of iZombie but without the zombie aspect.

The best thing I can equate it to is what used to happen with those spray cans of whip cream. I couldn’t open my fridge when one of those things were in there back when I was alive without grabbing it, popping the top, and shooting a mouthful of tasty, sweet whipped cream into my mouth.

I had to laugh as Ava talks about her life prior to enjoying a grey skin and a fake tan.

High school was a funny time for me. My freshman year I went into summer break barely discernable from the boys. The boob fairy had skipped my house once again. Couple that with braces which came with the oh-so-sexy headgear, and I was a crazy mother and a bad girls’ locker room incident away from being about as popular as Carrie. When I showed up on the first day of school my sophomore year after a summer at my cousins’ place in Florida, I was tan, down to just my retainer, and was sprinting towards my eventual 38DD finish line. All of a sudden, I was being asked out, I even joined the cheerleading squad. By the time that I graduated, I was the homecoming queen and had my pick of boys for the prom.

I don’t think she can be queen of the prom anymore. She was 30 something when she turned and now she has to navigate her first meaningful relationship with Lisa and help out the queen of the zombies who seems like a total brat.

Is it me, or has everything reached a point where nobody cares about anybody anymore unless there is a big disaster and a telethon? Here is a question. What are the first names of your neighbors…on both sides! What do they do for fun?

TW Brown may be a dude but he nailed (paranormal) chick-lit better than most chicks. He gave me a female character that I can identify with (even though I’m not a ghoul) and I hope to see several more stories about Ava in the future.
